Its all in your head....

This is my 2nd post since the blog first started and the biggest problem I had with deciding what to write was in choosing something that I thought others might be interested in reading about. After quickly realising that I had no monumental news or amazingly unique insight I decided to approach it in a different way. I want to know what you yes YOU reading (scanning) this now would actually be interested in reading about, please do leave any comments, questions or suggestions in the box below. Seriously though comments are where it’s at because no matter how stupid or insightful, 1 word or 1,000 I don’t mind. If not its a lot like giving a big speech to a room full of people finishing and then having everyone just sit there silently staring at you, very off putting I can assure you.

...that Kong-precision that you’ve looked at all those times, you do so because although it scares you you can see yourself doing it...

Anywho down to business…. mental blocks!!! It’s something that I’m sure a lot of you have come across at 1 time or another and it’s certainly something that can be very detrimental to your training if not handled carefully. One thing I’ve noticed personally, that I think is important to take into account is that your body knows it can do it. This may sound a bit weird at first but bare with me, a lot of the time I hear people claim they can’t because they are scared or that they want to but they are not sure if their jump is big enough, etc. But simply by seriously considering actually doing the jump they’ve demonstrated that somewhere inside they know it’s in their range. I want you to take a second and think of the most ridiculous jump you can, like precisioning the corner wall of the manpower drop for instance. You would never get a mental block about that jump because you know its an impossibility, maybe someone somewhere has god-like strength in there legs not to crumple and snap on impact but for the majority you would never seriously consider such a jump for yourself. But that cat jump you had in mind earlier or that Kong-precision that you’ve looked at all those times, you do so because although it scares you you can see yourself doing it. You can see that if you were somehow able to free up your mind you would have done it already. Now while that may not magically fix anything for you and maybe you knew it already its certainly food for thought.

But the reason I confuse and bore you with this is that today I’m going to find a jump that scares me or that I’ve put off for awhile and I’m going to do it. And not only that but I want you to as well, I want you to find something that makes you hesitate or walk away and I want you to do it. It doesn’t have to be big, it doesn’t have to be crazy, it can be something you’ve done before but for whatever reason are no longer comfortable with, it doesn’t even have to be anything that anyone else would find difficult that’s not the point, this is for you.

You have 1 month.

This time next month I’m going to post what my jump was maybe even a picture if possible and once I’ve done that I want you to tell me something about yours, what it was, how you did it or even just how you felt. I would really love to get as many people involved as possible so tell your friends, spread the word and good luck!

Hey bro,

i like your post n where your going with it. the other month i remember hearing that you should try n do something that scares you every time you train, this way you dont just become comfortable with your usual movements and you push your mind to progress as well. up until recently my training has been more focused on gathering technique and strength to move, but now i am ready to use these abilities and progress the mind to be just as strong as my movements. your post has come at a good time, as yesterday i went back to a kong to precision/cat (if you can picture that, a tiny placement for feet but rail so close it becomes a cat) that played with my mind something extreme. the gap was pretty damn big, but, it was the drop if failed which was the mental test. Any ways i succeeded. but now there is a very similar gap that has come to my attention. i got that feeling you were explaining above, because i know full well i can do it. it is just a bit further and with a drop below almost double the prior....

so you have a deal, i am keen to do this movement in a month.

Oh dude, that particular fourth-floor drop to a wall on the third floor at Pimlico I was telling you about is definately my challenge. I'll come back with pics too... If i'm still alive. (Fingers crossed!!)

A topic to write about: barefoot training possibly?

By Blogger Chloe, at 7:40 pm, April 13, 2009

Great post Dom, I love how you've made a new approach with the blog not only including the readers, but giving us challenges to overcome. Nice work & I look forward to seeing next months post ;)

Hey Dom, nice suggestion about a challenging jump!

For forward topics:
-How was Parkour Generations made from?, how (with details) did every one of the members meet and how do you share with others the pushing attitude that is like a signature for you?
- How to create or addapt an excercise or drill to improve certain aspects?

thanks keep training... really hard!

Thanks for the post. About a week ago I found a large (for me) standing precision over an alleyway and looked at it solidly for about an hour, fear got the better of me and I walked away. But for the rest of the day I was so disappointed with myself as this was the first time I had ever spent so long surveying a jump and just walked away.
Now I think I will return to the spot and confront my demon.
Thanks again for the challenge I look forward to next months.

I walked away from a particular level arm jump once because I decided that, though I could most likely pull it off, I would be out of training for a few too many days recovering from the excessive impact on my body it would've caused. So instead I have been taking it relatively slowly and building up my distance for level arm jumps so that my body can handle that impact regularly. Hopefully I will get that arm jump this week!

I think Ryan is onto a good thing with trying something scary (but not silly) regularly. I achieved a tree to tree precision on Sunday that I've been putting off for about 6 months. It's an awesome buzz, but we do have to be careful not to let that feeling go to our head and just try any old thing that we vaguely feel we can do.

You're definitely onto a winner with the "can-you-see-yourself-doing-it" yard stick. I find that I often assess my future potential and have to be sure that I am gauging things by my current abilities - sometimes I dream a bit too much which would be dangerous if I wasn't aware of it!

Train hard,

Sam

For what it's worth my advice would be not to worry about the subject of the blog too much. Blogs are meant to be organic after all! Just write what you are passionate about and be honest with yourself and the reader and the good stuff will come.

Hmmm...so this means in a months time i would have backflipped?

Wise words from the man himself :)

So this is big! I heard about your blog and after reading it I think I know just what you mean. I'm aiming for a different sort of jump, but I should be able to achieve it within the next month although everytime I think about it, it makes me want to run away so it will be tough but wish me luck!
